Powell, Bishop and Stonier were successors of a number of companies firstly established in 1851 which traded under this name until 1890 when they became Bishop & Stonier. The trade mark of a seated 'oriental' man with a parasol was registered in 1880 and was often used with the initials B P & SIt was also used by the successors Bishop & Stonier after 1891.

The octagonal shaped small tureen was made in 1887 in the  'Oriental Ivory' colourway as part of the Leicester pattern series produced by Powell, Bishop and Stonier in their factory in Hanley. The pattern features a plain red outer border, a black and beige inner border, and oriental style flora and fauna, with subtle gilt accents - all set to an ivory coloured background. The tureen measures approximately 27cm in diameter, 17cm wide and 7.5cm high. It has the most charming faux bamboo handles, popular with the Aesthetic Movement of the time.  In good condition apart from fading of the red trim which is commensurate with its age.
