This beautiful arts & crafts glazed stoneware bowl is pattern 159C and features the impressed Bretby sunburst backmark which dates it c1884. 
 
In 1879, Henry Tooth established Linthorpe Pottery in Middlesborough and developed innovative glazes that combined metal oxides in two or more glaze slips. Linthrope closed shortly thereafter and in 1882 William Ault, former manager of T. G. Greene & Co. pottery, and Henry Tooth founded Bretby Art Pottery in Woodville, Derbyshire.  Production began in October 1883. They purchased some of the Linthrope molds and the firm won a gold medal at the 1884 Crystal Palace Exhibition. After the Ault-Tooth partnership ended  Tooth & Co. continued to manufacture Bretby pottery on its own. The pottery remained in the hands of the Tooth family until 1933.
 
The unusual Lewisia plant makes an excellent indoor or outdoor patio potted plant. A clump-forming perennial which bushes up nicely, with fleshy rosettes of dark green leaves. Flowers prolifically for a long period if deadheaded regularly from spring to summer. Flowers range from pale to deep pink, apricot, orange and cream.
