An excellent Burleigh Ware (Burgess & Leigh) fruit bowl from their celebrated Art Deco era (circa 1930s). It has beautiful orange, yellow, and cream mottled colours which was a classic 1930s treatment and the well resembles marble or alabaster. Burleigh factory decorators achieved this finish by using sponges or fine cloth rags to dab on layers of diluted enamel glaze before firing it in the kiln, giving the earthenware body the illusion of polished alabaster. 
 
The decorative patterns are most striking featuring a geometric and floral pattern heavily inspired by East Asian lacquered screens, with stylised white peonies outlined in heavy black transfer print, sitting against a rich tomato-red ground. The combination of geometric borders and sponge-mottled grounds was typically used on large decorative salad bowls, fruit display bowls and footed jardinieres
 
During the 1930s, the Middleport Pottery factory in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, was hitting its creative peak. Under the design direction of artists like Charlotte Rhead and Harold Bennett, Burleigh Ware became famous for bold, hand-painted tube-lined or enamelled statement pottery lines just like this one.
 
The bowl is in excellent condition and planted generously with bright pink cerise cyclamens in an inner pot with our proprietary compost mix. The cyclamens will flower for weeks and when they have finished flowering can then be planted into the garden.
 
Our potted plants come with carefully researched provenances and detailed plant care instructions. We also offer gift wrap using Cambridge Imprint paper and a handwritten card.
