This striking piece is an authentic Bourne & Leigh (Leighton Pottery) Art Deco planter / bulb bowl in the "Chinese Rose" pattern (Pattern No. 4544), manufactured in Burslem, Staffordshire, England, circa 1930–1937 is in impeccable condition and in the most beautiful jade green colour.
While the central reserve features a hand-enamelled, Chinoiserie-style pink tree peony, the distinctive deep green body is decorated with an all-over, underglaze stippled lace print known as chintz. The stylised, rectangular gold frame surrounding the blossom near the top rim is a signature Art Deco styling element used by Bourne & Leigh.
Historically, Staffordshire potters used the term "Jap" or "Japanned" on factory order sheets and stamps to denote items that mimicked heavy, dark Asian lacquerware or pieces that underwent a specific overglaze firing process with a high-shine black or deep green ground.
