An important early Charles James patent ironstone master fruit bowl in the ‘Flying Bird’ pattern c 1835. In good condition with some crazing, rubbing to gilt and small chip to underside of foot pedestal, but no cracks at all. Planted with cerise Cyclamen ‘hederifolium’ which will flower for months.
 
This is a rare large format Georgiian/Early Victorian fruit or punch bowl with transfer pattern extensively hand-decorated and overglazed in a vibrant Imari-palette enamel-fired oxides. The well contains the detailed chinoiserie Flying Bird or long-tailed pheasant, tree paeonies and Oriental-styled foliage. The inner and outer rims are finished with intricate geometric diaper-pattern bands and highlighted with gold gilding.
 
Underside features the authentic underglazed Mason makers mark from the period 1825-1848 and has the iron red enamel senior decorator tally marks of ‘1’ and ‘3’.
