A very attractive unmarked ironstone pedestal bowl made in the early 20th century decorated in an Imari-inspired pattern called "Amherst Japan", comprising flowers, leaves and inside, a pagoda and gravel path. The pattern here is a less detailed version of Minton's original and has elements of "Gaudy Welsh" about it. It has lovely colours with turquoise and soft blues, burnt orange and dark blue underglaze.  It has a looped looped pattern in the shape of a horseshoe in relief on the bowl.
 
"Amherst Japan" is named after Lord Amherst (1773-1857), the British diplomat who was envoy to Beijing and later, the Governor General of India. These bowls are often attributed to Minton, after pieces made in the mid 1800s. However, the "Made in England" mark on the base dates it much later, somewhere between 1910 and 1940. 
 
Planted  unusually with the perennial Sedum sieboldii  in an inner pot with our proprietary compost mix. The sedum is alsoknown as October Daphne or Japanese Stonecrop which seems appropriate to the bowl! The sedums can be grown indoors in a sunny place and will flower shortly with bright pink flowers. The succulent-type leaves turn a beautiful deep purpley red during winter. We recommend that you plant your sedum out into the garden as it needs a cold snap to come back again next season.
