A very pretty ironstone vessel featuring the most gorgeous elephant head handles. It's in good decorative condition apart from some rubbing to the gilt and some small chips on the middle feet which do not detract, but are reflected in the price.
The bowl is unmarked but is most likely Minton as it has all the classic Minton design traits from their Aesthetic Movement era c1870–1885. During this period, Minton frequently collaborated with well-known designers like Christopher Dresser who regularly incorporated Eastern influences, complex geometry, and functional animal motifs into their jardinieres and cabinet vases.
Minton famously favoured elephant-head decorations, heavily utilising them on handles, feet, and vase necks across their Majolica and glazed earthenware lines. The bright gilding on the scrolling ear contours shown here is a standard Minton finishing technique.
The elegant, symmetrical white panel contains a delicately hand-painted botanical illustration of branch-grown berries and green foliage. This intentional contrast of natural realism framed inside rigid borders is a hallmark signature of the British Aesthetic design of its time. The main frame of the planter body features a black and white interlocking star-cross mosaic repeat. This exact style of "cloisonné" or repeating geometric pattern is a very common motif found across Minton's Aesthetic Movement pieces.
Planted generously with cyclamens in an inner pot with our proprietary compost mix, the cyclamens will flower for weeks and when they have finished flowering can then be planted into the garden.
