This exceptional and unusual piece is a large, antique Thomas Rathbone & Co. "Trentham" pattern footed bowl / vegetable tureen base. Based on the registration records it dates to the late Victorian or early Edwardian era, circa 1898–1912. 
 
The body is divided into alternating geometric panels. It features bright white cartouches displaying hand-enamelled pink and purple water lilies or lotus blossoms, contrasted against vibrant, deep cranberry-pink panels textured with a fine honeycomb diaper-work pattern. The spreading pedestal foot ring is beautifully decorated with an underglaze flowing cobalt blue acanthus leaf scroll.
 
The bowl does show some wear to the pattern and has been rubbed but it in otherwise good condition. Planted up generously with hyacinths and natural moss with our proprietary compost mix, the hyacinths will flower for weeks with their gorgeous scent and when they have finished flowering can then be planted into the garden.
