This bowl was manufactured at the Corona Pottery works in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent by the family-run firm of Sampson Hancock & Sons. This specific line was marketed under their highly popular "Corona Ware" trade name, which the company introduced in 1898 to signify their premium decorative earthenware collections.
The history behind the pattern name and design reveals a fascinating story of 20th-century British marketing: When Sampson Hancock & Sons launched this multi-coloured, hand-enamelled line in December 1913, it was intentionally marketed as an exact reproduction of antique Chinese imperial porcelain. The factory backstamp explicitly claims the design is a "Reproduction of Original Chinese Design Khang He Period 1722-36". However, historical design records note a funny discrepancy: the name "Cheng" was inspired by the Yung Chêng (Yongzheng) period (1723–1735), while the text "Khang He" phonetically referenced the Kangxi period (1662–1722). The design skillfully blended the best artistic styles of both historic Chinese eras, so wasn't exactly 'authentic' at all!
The bowl features large, vibrant orange and yellow peonies blooming from sweeping black branches. What sets this pattern apart is the incredibly detailed all-over background scrolling (often called a "scroll-work ground") that mimics traditional Chinese cloisonné enamel work, all beautifully framed by an intricate geometric and stylized floral border along the upper rim. Because the pattern was introduced end of 1913, production flourished throughout the 1910s and 1920s.
The bowl is in excellent condition and is planted generously with coral coloured cyclamens in an inner pot with our proprietary compost mix, the cyclamens will flower for weeks and when they have finished flowering can then be planted into the garden. Our potted plants come with carefully researched provenances and detailed plant care instructions. We also offer gift wrap using Cambridge Imprint paper and a handwritten card.
