This pretty unmarked bowl features the historic "Hawthorn" pattern which is a direct copy of the Chinese Kangxi period (1662–1722) porcelain ginger jars. The motif symbolises the arrival of spring and the hawthorn flowers falling onto frozen rivers, while the dense, geometric dark-blue lines underneath mimic cracking ice.
It was a very popular design with the prominent late-Victorian and early-20th-century British potteries who used it exstensively in affordable earthenware using transfer printing. Because multiple potteries utilised this identical public-domain Chinese motif, the unmarked bowl was almost certainly produced by one of three large Staffordshire firms:
- Royal Doulton (Burslem) – circa 1895–1920s: Royal Doulton ran a highly popular production run of this exact footed bowl under the official pattern name "Hawthorn". Their versions are distinguished by a deep, rich cobalt blue that mimics the ancient Chinese underglaze depth.
- Bishop & Stonier – circa 1894–1930s: Bishop & Stonier, printed a near-identical layout. Their earlier Victorian iterations often feature an heavily patterned interior as well, while their later Art Deco era bowls left the inside cream-white.
- William Adams & Sons – c1890–1910s: Adams famously produced an extensive line of this crackled-ice aesthetic under the pattern title "Prunus".
It's in excellent condition and planted up generously with cyclamens in an inner pot with our proprietary compost mix, the cyclamens will flower for weeks and when they have finished flowering can then be planted into the garden.
