An exceptional footed punch bowl made by J & MP Bell in Glasgow during thew 1860’s to 1870’s in the ‘Lily & Rose’ pattern. This bowl was manufactured at The Glasgow Pottery by brothers John and Matthew Perston Bell, the firm traded as J. & M. P. Bell & Co.While the English Staffordshire region dominated the 19th-century ceramic market, Bell's Pottery grew to become the most successful, innovative, and prolific commercial pottery factory in Scotland's history. They were highly celebrated for producing exceptionally crisp transferware that rivaled the finest English factories, as seen here in the intricate botanical details of the flowers.
 
Introduced during the high-Victorian period, "Lily & Rose" is considered collectible because it represents a good example  of the stylistic bridge between traditional mid-Victorian realism and the emerging Aesthetic Movement. The piece uses an underglaze transfer print base that was then carefully filled in by hand with multi-coloured enamel washes (polychrome) before its final firing. The gilded scrollwork borders running along the inner rim and foot ring are highlighted with a metallic sheen, giving it a classic lustreware finish. 
 
The bowl due to its deep, open size and weight was structurally designed as a Toddy or Punch Bowl. In 19th-century Scotland, steaming "whisky toddy" or shared punches were a major staple of formal social gatherings, and a decorative pedestal bowl served as a proud table centrepiece. 
 
Planted generously with cyclamens in an inner pot with our proprietary compost mix, the cyclamens will flower for weeks and when they have finished flowering can then be planted into the garden. Our potted plants come with carefully researched provenances and detailed plant care instructions. We also offer gift wrap using Cambridge Imprint paper and a handwritten card.
